Goal: get the eSIM profile on the phone before boarding. After landing in Japan, turn on the line and roaming as the product page says.
Check the phone first
- iPhone XS and newer usually support eSIM
- Many recent Androids do — Settings → Mobile network → Add eSIM
- Carrier-locked phones may not install
Typical iPhone steps
- Buy a plan, then open the Klook email/confirmation for the QR or install code
- On home Wi‑Fi → Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data → Add eSIM
- Scan the QR and name the line (e.g. “Japan”)
- Don’t turn on Data Roaming yet until you land (follow the plan rules)
- On landing: set Japan as Mobile Data + Data Roaming per the product guide
Typical Android steps
- Settings → Network & internet → SIMs / Mobile network → Download a SIM / Add eSIM
- Scan the QR from email or the product page
- Name it and select it for data after you land
- Enable roaming only when the product guide says to
SoftBank / Xplori / Sakura activation details can differ slightly — re-read the product page after purchase.
If install fails
- You need Wi‑Fi during install — don’t wait until the plane with no network
- Restart after scanning the QR
- Update iOS / Android first
- Still stuck? Use Klook chat from the order email
Pre-flight checklist
- eSIM profile is visible on the phone
- QR / email saved offline
- You know which line will be Mobile Data
- Plan days match the trip
