Shinkansen at a station in Japan

Japan · JR Pass

Is the JR Pass still worth it?

Worth it with several intercity shinkansen rides — not if you stay in one city

Updated Oct 2026

The nationwide JR Pass got more expensive after 2023 — don’t buy it because “everyone said so.” Decide from the number of shinkansen rides, not days in Japan.

Quick take

  • Worth it for Tokyo + Osaka/Kyoto + Hiroshima in about 7 days
  • Not worth it for Tokyo only, or Kansai only
  • Nozomi / Mizuho aren’t included on the standard Pass — pay extra for the fastest trains

If you skip JR Pass

  • Suica — tap transit in cities, reload as needed
  • Skyliner — Narita into Tokyo is often faster than relying on JR Pass
  • Kansai Railway Pass — Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe
